Abbot and Costello

General NewsYou have to be old enough to remember Abbott and Costello, and too old
to REALLY understand computers, to fully appreciate this. For those of
us who sometimes get flustered by our computers, please read on...

If Bud Abbott and Lou Costello were alive today, their infamous
sketch, 'Who's on First?' might have turned out something like this:

COSTELLO CALLS TO BUY A COMPUTER FROM ABBOTT......

ABBOTT: Super Duper computer store. Can I help you?

COSTELLO: Thanks I'm setting up an office in my den and I'm thinking
about buying a computer.

ABBOTT: Mac?

COSTELLO: No, the name's Lou.

ABBOTT: Your computer?

COSTELLO: I don't own a computer. I want to buy one.

ABBOTT: Mac?

COSTELLO: I told you, my name's Lou.

ABBOTT: What about Windows?

COSTELLO: Why? Will it get stuffy in here?

ABBOTT: Do you want a computer with Windows?

COSTELLO: I don't know. What will I see when I look at the windows?

ABBOTT: Wallpaper.

COSTELLO: Never mind the windows. I need a computer and software.

ABBOTT: Software for Windows?

COSTELLO: No. On the computer! I need something I can use to write
proposals, track expenses and run my business. What do you have?

ABBOTT: Office.

COSTELLO: Yeah, for my office. Can you recommend anything?

ABBOTT: I just did.

COSTELLO: You just did what?

ABBOTT: Recommend something.

COSTELLO: You recommended something?

ABBOTT: Yes.

COSTELLO: For my office?

ABBOTT: Yes.

COSTELLO: OK, what did you recommend for my office?

ABBOTT: Office.

COSTELLO: Yes, for my office!

ABBOTT: I recommend Office with Windows.

COSTELLO: I already have an office with windows! OK, let's just say
I'm sitting at my computer and I want to type a proposal. What do I
need?

ABBOTT: Word.

COSTELLO: What word?

ABBOTT: Word in Office.

COSTELLO: The only word in office is office.

ABBOTT: The Word in Office for Windows.

COSTELLO: Which word in office for windows?

ABBOTT: The Word you get when you click the blue 'W'.

COSTELLO: I'm going to click your blue 'w' if you don't start with
some straight answers. What about financial bookkeeping? You have
anything I can track my money with?

ABBOTT: Money.

COSTELLO: That's right. What do you have?

ABBOTT: Money.

COSTELLO: I need money to track my money?

ABBOTT: It comes bundled with your computer.

COSTELLO: What's bundled with my computer?

ABBOTT: Money.

COSTELLO: Money comes with my computer?

ABBOTT: Yes. No extra charge.

COSTELLO: I get a bundle of money with my computer? How much?

ABBOTT: One copy.

COSTELLO: Isn't it illegal to copy money?

ABBOTT: Microsoft gave us a license to copy Money.

COSTELLO: They can give you a license to copy money?

ABBOTT: Why not? THEY OWN IT!

(A few days later)

ABBOTT: Super Duper computer store. Can I help you?

COSTELLO: How do I turn my computer off?

ABBOTT: Click on 'START'.............

'City of Heroes' Announces "Going Rogue" Major Expansion With New Trailer

Posted by Jeffrey Kanjanapangka - Tuesday, May 12, 2009 10:44 AM

NcSoft announced today that their long-running, superhero MMO franchise City of Heroes, has a major expansion in development for the PC and Mac. Titled, "Going Rogue", the expansion aims to blur the line between good and evil:

"City of Heroes Going Rogue will introduce a new alignment system that helps players explore the shades of gray that lie between good and evil. For the first time, hero characters can become villains and vice versa, enabling hero archetypes to cross over to the Rogue Isles™ and villain archetypes to experience Paragon City™. Clearly marked missions, in addition to behaviors and decisions made by the player, will move a hero's or villain's moral compass, which could eventually change the hero's or villain's alignment."

Here's the accompanying announcement trailer to illustrate the idea in a more bombastic fashion. No details on release dates as of yet. For more check the out the official site here.

World of Warcraft: Details On This Year's Blizzcon Pet

Posted by Stephen Johnson - Tuesday, May 12, 2009 2:33 PM

Grunty: World of Warcraft Blizzcon Pet

The adorable little fellow you see picture above is Grunty, the Murloc Marine, the World of Warcraft pet that comes with admission to this year's Blizzcon. According to Blizzard, this Starcraft II inspired fellow "is fully armored and comes equipped with a gauss rifle, which he’ll occasionally fire into the air to make sure no invisible spacecraft are swooping in to attack."

Yes. People in Azeroth will be jealous of you.

Tickets go on sale on Saturday, May 16, with a second allotment to be released on May 30. Check out Blizzard's site for all the details. Grunty will also be given to anyone who orders the DirecTV pay-per-view coverage of Blizzcon, and, judging from prices paid on eBay for WoW pets in previous years, it might be a smart investment, especially if you wait a year or so to unload it. Cha-ching!

What do you think of the little guy? I'm torn. I'm not sure I like such blatant cross-game "synergy" in Blizzard games, but on the other hand, he's pretty adorable. Check out the video below made by MMO Champion!

'Final Fantasy XIII' To Be English-Only On Xbox 360?

Posted by Jake Gaskill - Tuesday, May 12, 2009 4:28 PM

'Final Fantasy XIII' To Be English-Only On Xbox 360?

Finally. A story that absolutely no one will have opinion about.

In an interview with the folks over at IGN UK, Square Enix hotshots Yoshinori Kitase and Takeshi Arakawa revealed that the Xbox 360 version of Final Fantasy XIII will most likely be English-only, and therefore won't include a Japanese voice track. But before you PlayStation 3 owners start laughing heartedly at your 360 counterparts, its looking like English-only for you as well.

As Kitase points out, the 360s lack of Blu-ray makes it impossible to include the extra voice track, and Square Enix continues to promote platform equality in terms of their production model, even though the company has clearly stated that the 360 is preventing it from doing a few things it would like to have done with the game (i.e. release a Blu-ray version of the demo outside of Japan).

Then again, Kitase seemed genuinely perplexed when he asked, "Are there many people who would like to play with Japanese voices?"

So whether the 360s limitations will result in anything significantly negative and/or damaging to FFXIII's overall game experience when the title finally arrives stateside is entirely speculative at this point. In the meantime, stories like this one will only serve to fuel fan flames, even if PS3 fans could care less about whatever compromises are made on account of the 360.

How many PS3 fans are genuinely upset about a possible English-only version of FFXIII? Honestly.

Garriott v. NCsoft Corporation

Earlier today, Richard Garriott filed a lawsuit against the NCsoft Corporation at the Texas Western District Court's Austin Office. The nature of the suit is Torts - Property - Other Fraud, and the cause being Diversity-Fraud, in the jurisdiction of Diversity, for the amount for $24,000,000.00. Yes, you read that correctly, TWENTY FOUR MILLION DOLLARS. Of course, that's US Denominations, so let's say he really just wants a crate of astronaut ice cream, on good authority of Liquid-X.

For further explanation, read the whole story!

To break this whole thing down into terms that are actually fit for human consumption, it requires some duct tape and a few prayers. The 'nature of the suit', meaning the reason he's suing, is Torts - Property - Other Fraud. The keyword here is FRAUD. Tort is a body of law that addresses, and provides remedies for, civil wrongs not arising out of contractual obligations (Wiki Article). In short, Richard Garriott is saying that NCsoft did not follow the contract he had with the company, in some form, unknown as of current.

The cause, Diversity-Fraud (see that keyword again?), with the jurisdiction of Diversity, is fairly simple. Richard Garriott is requesting that a U.S. (federal) district court to hear the case. Diversity simply means, in this matter, that the parties involved in the lawsuit are of different states. Not state of mind, though that is wholly debatable at this point. This is merely geographical in nature. These cases aim to be heard before a jury of peers, though obviously, a judge can decide beforehand if this is necessary.

Of course, the last portion of this equation is the amount. Twenty-four MILLION dollars! Maybe no astronaut ice cream, yet regardless, that is a massive amount of money. Enough for almost anyone to pull a double-take. Garriott either must have felt severely wronged or slighted to decide upon such a large sum. There is always the possibility that in his contract with NCsoft, Garriott included a stipulation for such a matter. We simply do not know at this point.

Richard Garriott vs NCsoft Corporation, steel cage match! Let the battle begin!

Settle the Matter Like Geeks in the Ultradome

Startrekhero_l Every geek has done it, at one point in their lives or another, posit hypothetical battles and try to decide who'd win. Would Superman beat the Hulk? Darth Vader vs. Gandalf? The U.S.S. Enterpise vs. the Battlestar Galactica?

Heroes star Milo Ventimiglia is looking to dramatize these "eternal" battles for a Web series called Ultradome, which would use THE AWESOME POWER OF SPECIAL EFFECTS (sorry, caps are really the only way to convey BOOMING VOICE) to pit fictional figures against one another in an arena environment. As Ventimiglia told the Hollywood Reporter: "My whole life has been spent engaged with friends in intellectual debate...like whether Captain Kirk is tougher than Spock or if Middle Earth is a more difficult place to live than Tatooine. With Ultradome, we can bring these debates to the public and settle them in the most logical way possible: through armed combat."

Cool, right? But here's the catch: You won't see, say, CG versions of Star Wars' Han Solo facing off against Firefly's Malcolm Reynolds. You'll see two two fans dressed up as the character they're championing doing battle. And suddenly I'm way less interested. Why? Because I don't necessarily want to anything that reminds me of this. I mean, I get it: The rights/licensing issues alone would make it prohibitively expensive for a TV series, let alone a series of webisodes. It just feels like something you'd see in a recessed corner of Comic-Con, with a gaggle of slave Leias cheering the combatants on.

But, hey, props to Milo for letting his geek flag fly. He walks it like he talks it.

(And, for the record, Superman would defeat the Hulk. As my friend John correctly reasoned, while the Hulk's strength is, theoretically, limitless -- given that it's based entirely on his level of rage -- Superman's power is will-based. He flies because he wants to fly. And will doesn't require leverage. Do not ask me when we had this conversation. All I will say is, it happened after we were both married.)

Miniature GamesThe Uncharted Seas

The Uncharted Seas is a fast paced, action packed game of naval tactical combat set in a world of high fantasy. Using superb resin and white metal miniatures, and controlled by fast and easy to learn rules, the game allows you to wage war with fantastical squadrons of mighty warships.

Choose from one of several races, including the Iron Dwarfs with their steam powered ironclads, Orc Raiders with their grotesque machines of war, the ever powerful Dragon Lords, an ancient race of magical seafarers, Imperial Humans hell bent on grabbing as much land as they can and the Thaniras Elves with their sleek ships of war.

The whole premise of The Uncharted Seas rules is deliver a fun and fast game. The aim is to have a game finished within in 1.5 to 2 hours – or longer if you want to play multiplayer games or use much bigger fleets.

The decks of cards (given away with each fleet bought) play an important role in the game, but you can play without them. Our recommendation is that you DO use the cards as they add a wonderful colour to game proceedings and a certain fog of war.

Fellow Battletech players:

The event that was planned to be held tomorrow at Wizards Asylum in Norman (Battletech: Heavy Combat) has been cancelled due to the severity of the winter weather in the Oklahoma City area.

Please accept my apologies for the short notice; I was hoping this would not be as bad of a storm as it is turning out to be.  Everyone please stay home tomorrow and stay safe.

I will aim to reschedule, probably for early May due to other commitments in April.

Thanks again for your support!!!

Best regards,
