Video Game News

Jim Lee and his superhero creatin' crew dished out a few details during Comic-Con on their promising MMO title, DC Universe Online. The game published by Sony Online Entertainment is due out sometime next year for the Playstation 3 and PC. Here are some of the things Lee discussed:

  • Action-oriented combat will be implemented into the title to nullify several monotonous "grinding" sessions, and super powers will be ready to use from the beginning.
  • Ability to create leagues and legions (Justice and Doom!)
  • No word yet on subscription fees
  • The Dark Knight fans, Christian Bale's reprisal won't be in the game. Lee said that "this game will be the purest form of the DC Universe."
  • Loot aesthetics can be modified and will retain the traditional MMO "rare" finds
  • Individual hero storylines will be given, but there will be world events where you must fight another player depending on the situation (a player who's in Joker's posse robs a bank and then gets blocked by one of Batman's students...commence the GEEKING OUT!)

Check out the video from last week's E3 after the cut and make sure to stick around for more Comic-Con updates.

'Tron 2' Footage Screened At Comic-Con

Among the surprises at this year's Comic-Con in San Diego was Disney unveiling some brand new footage from Tron 2!

Jeff Bridges is back in the flick, and the trailer sounds like it's a more-violent, visceral version of the the original flick. In it, a fast-paced light cycle duel is interrupted with a cut to the "real" world, where an older, tougher looking Flynn is basically playing a videogame. Back to the computer world: The race ends in a violent crash. The victorious driver lifts his visor to reveal that it's Flynn, the hero of the original flick.

The defeated driver says: "But it's only a game."

Flynn: "Not any more."

And title.  Intriguing! Disney promises we'll be seeing more footage from the movie closer to its release next year.

General NewsAn Anonymous Reader Reports: On the heels of a failed product launch in March, an inability to refund consumers their money for preorders of said product, and a subsequent consumer backlash, West End Games is officially on the block. After posting a scathing condemnation of RPGnet, Dana Jorgensen, and RPG hobbyisits in general, the current owner of West End Games (Eric Gibson a.k.a. Hellsreach) announced on his own forums that he is selling the entire company because he is "tired of all the work for negative reward".

A Call To Arms

General News

The Furthest Reaches of Space
As you will likely have heard, we have recently signed a deal with Iron Wind for them to produce the complete range of B5: A Call to Arms miniatures. This is great news for all fans of A Call to Arms, as Iron Wind are among the best in the business, and will ensure the continuation of the range as we continue to work on new rulebooks.

The first of these is, of course, Powers & Principalities. The general intention of this book (or brief, as writers like to call it) is to give something 'cool' to every fleet. We want people to open the book up, look for their fleet's entry and say 'Wow! Can't wait to try that!'

To do this, the book is divided into several sections - there are new campaigns and scenarios to try, of course. However, we have also added some new variants of ships (we are talking to Iron Wind about some brand new models, but they will not be ready for the Autumn release of Powers & Principalities), and a 'Fleet Command' chapter. The later contains one or more entries for each fleet that, as well as change the stats of some ships, basically give you 'cool things to do'. For example, when a Shadow flies past a Psi Corps ships, its psychic scream will wreak havoc with those on board. Earth ships in the Early Years will have a chance to try the Bonehead Manoeuvre (not recommended), while the Abbai have Special Actions unique to them that allow them to either boost their shields or lay mines.

Stuff like that.

Preliminary work has also started on the Dilgar Invasion Era book, which is something I have been looking forward to for sometime. As well as a full history of the war, there are effectively new fleet lists for every combatant government, detailing the older tech and hulls of the time. Each will be compatible and balanced against the current fleets for the purposes of tournaments - just don't expect too many War level ships!

Spain treats child phone addicts

Experts are concerned by children's increased use of mobile phones

Two children in Spain have been admitted to a mental health institution to be treated for addiction to their mobile phones, Spanish media report.

The children, aged 12 and 13, were sent to the clinic by their parents, who said they could not carry out normal activities without their handsets.

They were doing badly at school and lying to relatives in order to get money to spend on their phones.

They have been learning to cope without their phones for three months.

Dr Maite Utges, who runs the Child and Youth Mental Health Centre in Lleida, near Barcelona in north-eastern Spain, said it was the first time the clinic had treated children who were dependent on their mobile phones.

"They both showed disturbed behaviour and this exhibited itself in failure at school. They both had serious difficulties leading normal lives," she was quoted in Spanish papers as saying.

The children had owned their phones for 18 months, and their parents had made little effort to restrict their use before noticing how serious their dependence had become.

'Tip of iceberg'

Dr Jose Martinez-Raga, an expert in addictions, said children who developed a dependency on mobile phones, like those who over-used video games, often became irritable, withdrawn and antisocial, and their school performance deteriorated.

He warned these cases could be the "tip of the iceberg", and that mobile phone addiction "could definitely be a danger in the future".

Fears have been raised in a number of countries about the adverse effects mobile phone use may have on children.

Dr Utges recommended that parents not allow their children to have mobile phones until they reached 16 years of age.

WoW Addicts More Shameful Than Porn Addicts

Video Game News

Dr. Jerald Block is an Oregon Psychiatrist who deals with gaming addiction, an ever-growing and, according to Block, under-recognized form of addiction with complicated pitfalls for treatment.

World of Warcraft addicts, for instance, have a hard time getting treatment because of the language barrier between the therapist and the patient as many psychiatrists have no idea what a guild is or what it means to advance in levels.

Even more interestingly, porn addicts feel less shame when addicted than WoW fans.

Block says: As a society we understand that porn is something people do, and you can see a psychiatrist and get treated for it. But gaming is hard to describe to anyone else. So these people can't explain their situation to friends. In fact, it's hard to give you an example of what my clients talk about, because gaming is enormously complicated.

Also, Jack Thompson apparently gets the first comment on the Game Politics article, and if that really is him, it shows how delusional and computer illiterate he really is.
